Summer
Summer at Luffness Mains usually consists of crop maintenance and growing. We use irrigation when required to enhance crop growth and quality. Early potato crops are harvested from June.
Autumn
Autumn is the busiest period on the farm, the main crop of potatoes are lifted from the middle of September through to the middle of October, making the most of the dry weather. September is also the month for combining the Winter and Spring Wheat. As the fields are cleared by the combine and potato harvester we take the opportunity to drill and cultivate for next year’s winter cereals crops.
Winter
Winter at Luffness Mains has some very short days with long hours of darkness, and cold and damp weather. Our potatoes and wheat are in storage throughout the winter months. This time of year is quiet on the farm until we start grading seed potatoes in January and putting into our chitting sheds for planting from March. We occasionally experience snow, but winter frosts are normal.
